As we know that most of the times, one’s personality decides whether if she or he deserves something or not. But what is this personality? And what does the personality mean? Normally you know that the characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving of an individual is different from each other. When one feels happy about what they do, another can’t be so due to his characteristics or feeling. Likewise there are variety of such uniqueness in this world. So this set of traits or qualities that define a person’s unique identity is what we called as personality.
Though the personality emerge from within the individual, it remains fairly consistent throughout the life. So the parents and teachers are highly responsible to develop the kid’s personality. But why? Because everyone have that duty specially to the parents and teachers for creating a better human being who can survive in the society in best way.
Is personality stable?
Sometimes you may have heard that “it takes a long time to build up a person, but just a second to break him.” This is about the personality. But have you ever checked whether this statement is so true? It’s common to face many difficulties in life. As an example, a person who is expertized in presentation skill may face any difficulty one day at a conference. With this incident, another person says “oh my god! what a shame? Did you see? He lost his personality at the conference”. No doubt you have faced such incidents. But don’t mismatch the words “losing the personality” and “losing the impression”. Of course, Building a personality is not just an action which we can do quickly. Actually it is a long term process. In the same way, changing or destroy one’s personality is too hard to do within a second.
Personality is ever present
Your personality is unique to you. Sometimes it may be with your skills and ideas sometimes. The way you dress, the way you behave, the way you talk also contributes for one’s personality. It affects your thinking, feelings and behavior. Personality helps you to adjust and “survive” in the society. So we can say it’s not just physiological but also psychological.
What are key determinants of personality development and differences?
Nature vs nurture
The most important thing to focus is this. Let’s focus this with an example. There is a person who is well mannered, friendly and fully we called him as a person who has a good personality. Ok! One can say that he has received this personality, because his family background has a good personalities too. Another person argues that it’s not so. He has absorbed this personality through the socialization process. So we now have a question. Is personality innate or acquired? This question is also called the nature-nurture debate.
For the above question it’s hard to give answer without thinking twice. Because one’s personality is shaped by a combination of nature (genetically determined) and the nurture (societal factors) influenced. So for one’s personality, nature and nurture contributes more or less.
There is a Five Factor Model breaks personality down into five components such as Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. These are called “big five” as it determines one’s uniqueness. Those are,
Openness
The Big Five personality theory lists openness as one of the five personality traits. It shows a person’s open-mindedness. A person with a high level of openness enjoys trying new things in his life. They are creative, imaginative, and always with open-minded.
